Angel In Action

Amanda Hill, BSDH, RDH from Norfolk, Virginia has done non-dental volunteering for For Kids in the past through her church but this is the first time she’s set up a dental event. She’s truly excited to connect her passion for oral health with making a difference in her community. Amanda says, “I feel like God is calling to use my voice to stand up for the voiceless.”

HFH: What is the organization’s mission/vision. How did you get involved?
Amanda: For Kids is a local organization that aims to end the cycle of poverty and homelessness here in my area of Virginia. We recently moved back to the area after 5 years away.  I knew immediately I wanted to find a way to make a difference in my community.  Our local dental clinic has not reopened since Covid and there are so many people that count on those services.  By joining this year’s Christmas drive, kids will not only get a gift and clothes but a dental kit to help keep them healthy. I’d love to set up oral health instruction in the future.

HFH: How/When did you first learn of Hygienists For Humanity?
Amanda: I met Alicia over the internet and then we met in person at last year’s ADHA when she was receiving the Heart to Hands Award.  I have followed H4H on Facebook and through the newsletter for a while now and knew I wanted to be a difference-maker too!

HFH: Why do you/organization support Hygienists For Humanity?
Amanda: Hygienists For Humanity represents bridging access to care and helping everyone to be seen (even those that are often unseen).  This is so important, especially now.  With Covid disproportionately affecting people in lower-income brackets and so many of the safety nets being cut off H4H is there to be there when others aren’t.

HFH: Who is your other wing? Who/what keeps you going?
Amanda: My faith in God calls me to be the hands and feet of Jesus.  In my abundance, I am called to use my gifts to shine a light where there is darkness.

Executive Committee Corner

Hello, Angels! We hope you are doing well and enjoying the fall season. Since last season’s newsletter, Hygienists For Humanity has been continuing its growth and welcomes Samantha Verdadero, RDH, BSDH, our new Media Relations Chair. She is excited to be a part of Hygienists For Humanity’s Executive Committee and will be sharing the space soon for angels who would love to share their skills and talents for our social media team. Contact us at hygienistsforhumanity@gmail.com to learn more about opportunities on our social media team!

During National Dental Hygiene Month in October, we launched our Essential Scrub Cap fundraiser, we’ve received heartwarming responses from dental hygienists telling us WHY they are essential! From being whole body health advocates to inflammation prevention specialists, these are reasons why we love the field of dental hygiene and why we’re #essential. We truly appreciate your support in the success of our Essential Scrub Cap fundraiser and will continue its sale until November 30, 2020!

Being back to work has changed the way we have viewed infection control and the safety of our patients. Young Dental knows we’re essential and has offered all of our essential angels a sample of the platter guard prophy angle to keep you safe while you do the essential work you’re designed to do. We are thankful for the commitment of companies like Young to support the efforts of dental hygienists around the world. Click the link above to receive your sample of splatter guard angles and if you love the angles, be sure to let Young know on Instagram!

Keep an eye out for opportunities to support vulnerable populations and/or volunteer from home and celebrate our 3-year anniversary! We are hosting Children’s Oral Health Month in February 2021 with opportunities.

Thank You For Being Our Other Wing!
